Healthy Cat Food For Cats- What Should I Feed My Cat?
20:03
Considering what to feed your cat is very important. Cats can gain weight quickly and can easily become overweight or even obese which can lead to health problems such as diabetes.
The amount of food your cat needs each day will depend on her age, breed, level of activity and whether your cat has been neutered. Neutered cats tend to put on weight more quickly than cats who have not been neutered.
I advise that you purchase the best quality food that you can afford. Most supermarket cat food brands are high in carbohydrates as these are cheaper to manufacturer. Cats don’t need many carbs in their diet, and too many can lead to rapid weight gain.
Adult cats should generally be fed twice per day, typically morning and evening. If your cat is a healthy weight then you can leave dry food out for during the day; many cats like to graze and eat little and often. They will usually stop eating when they have had enough, but some develop a habit of eating everything they are given- if your cat becomes overweight then you may need to limit her to a twice daily feeding.
Cats should ideally be fed a mixture of dry and wet/ canned food. Wet food is also available in foiled pouches or cartons. Some cats enjoy raw chicken necks or wings, but you should avoid feeding your cat cooked meat or bones as the bones can splinter in the stomach and cause damage, or even choke her. You may also feed your cat raw meat- throw the meat out if she does not eat it within 30 minutes as dangerous levels of bacteria can soon build.
Cats should not be given milk as they can not digest it properly. Special ‘cat milk’ is available in stores which is a good substitute and a special treat. Make sure your cat has fresh clean water available at all times.
A balanced diet for your cat will allow her to lead a happy energetic life. Your vet will also give you advice on feeding your cat if you have any further queries.
